Rutland Cranes was appointed to carry out a full contract lift for a stonemasonry client exhibiting at Clerkenwell Design Week in London. The project involved installing a bespoke stone structure in a high-visibility public space.

The Challenge

The site posed several operational constraints:

  • Restricted site footprint including live footpaths and part of an active road
  • Requirement for zero disruption to the general public
  • Fragile, non-replaceable stone elements with unusual shapes
  • A tight exhibition build schedule with no margin for delay

Our Solution

Following a detailed site assessment and consultations with the client, event organiser, and local stakeholders, we selected the Maeda MC-285 spider crane for its lightweight and compact setup — ideal for operating safely on sensitive surfaces with limited ground pressure.

To ensure absolute safety and control, we paired the crane with lifting beams, allowing for delicate handling of each unique stone element. Our team managed crowd protection measures, including an exclusion zone and physical barriers to ensure full segregation from the public.

All work was carried out to a strict deadline under our Lift Plan and RAMS, ensuring smooth delivery ahead of exhibition opening.

The Outcome

  • Installation completed safely and on time, ahead of the public event
  • Zero public disruption despite working in a live urban environment
  • Client called us back post-exhibition to dismantle and reload the structure
